“It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye” –
Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

Energy healing is a popular holistic approach to medicine designed to facilitate good health through the use of light healing energy and a cleansing of the aura. It is thought that our natural flow of energy by default moves towards a state of perfect wellbeing and homeostasis. When we face adversity or trauma that is too painful for us to properly process, we hold onto the unresolved negative energy, which can weigh us down and result in body aches and pains, migraines, lethargy, anxiety and depression. In a lot of cases,
symptoms such as these are indicators that there is an underlying ‘invisible’ psychological or emotional problem that we have to address.

An energy healer works with the client to trace the causes of their suffering back to its roots deep within the psyche, helping them to process and let go of traumas and bring about a deeper understanding and awareness of the self. This allows for improvements in both our physical and mental health, as well as lessening any strain we may be feeling in our interpersonal relationships or closeness to a God.

The idea is that if any negative health symptoms or conditions were to be suddenly taken away without a corresponding change in our thought patterns and belief systems, it would not take long before said condition returns. Through a guided process of inner inquiry, energy healing can create within us the necessary shift from an ego-driven perspective to one of complete self-awareness to restore balance in our lives and a return to good health and happiness. Here’s a rundown of the theory behind energy healing and what you can expect from a session to help you decide whether or not you could benefit from a realigning of the chakras.

Energy Fields
While different terminologies and definitions are used by different practitioners, the main commonality among energy healing theories is that the human body is made up of five different layers of energy known as energy fields. Each field is prone to blockages from negative energy and can be in a state of balance or imbalance — which is why healers stress the importance of treating not only the physical body, but each individual energy field.
Here’s a quick summary of each field and what it is thought to be responsible for:

Physical:
The first layer in our 5 fields of energy is the physical body itself. This field is the only tangible one with weight and shape, and imbalances in each of the other 4 fields can cause tension and ill-health in our physical self.

Etheric:
This field has been described by healers as a blueprint or hologram of the physical structure that it surrounds. The etheric field is tethered to your physical body — delivering it the necessary energy to do everything it does — and also connects to your emotional and mental energy fields, acting as the link between the three.

Emotional:
Centrally located amongst the five layers, our emotional energy field is where we store our fears and feelings. As the name would suggest, this field is responsible for the regulation of our emotions and can be quite volatile when we experience extreme highs or lows.

Mental:
Our mental energy field is where we store our ideas and belief systems. All our thoughts are processed and assimilated here, acting as a hub for our perceptions. Blockages in this field result in difficulties in concentration and lateral thinking.

Spiritual:
Acting as the final layer, the spiritual energy field is what homes our higher awareness, tying us to our past lives and a state of metaphysical universal consciousness.

The Seven Chakras
The human aura is thought to be made up of 7 different energy centres — or chakras — each rotating and vibrating at different frequencies and corresponding with different colours.
Each chakra governs a certain area of the body, as well as the organs and nervous systems associated with that particular area. Negative energy is heavy, and acts to slow the chakras’ vibrational frequencies, creating imbalance and ill-health in the systems controlled by the
affected chakra if left untreated.

The crown chakra, located at the top of the head, represents our connection with divinity and is most commonly coloured purple or white — but can also be gold or magenta depending on the person. Blockages in this energy centre make us feel disconnected from those around us.

The dark blue brow chakra, known also as the third eye, sits just above our brow and governs our interpretation of life and the world around us, as well as playing a role in imagination and creativity. A blockage in the brow chakra tends to manifest itself in memory deficits, a reduced ability to listen to your inner voice, or dizziness and headaches.

Our throat chakra, coloured light blue, is located in the centre of the neck, acting as a passage for energy to flow between the head and lower body. The throat chakra is an important instrument in communication and expression and blockages can result in thyroid problems or TMJ.

The green heart chakra lies in the middle of the chest, acting as a centre for our love and compassion. Any stress or emotional pain causing blockages to this chakra can make it difficult to form bonds and keep healthy relationships.

The stomach or solar plexus chakra, coloured yellow, is located just above the belly button, and runs all the way up to the breastbone. This energy centre carries your ‘warrior energy’, and acts as a source of self-esteem and personal power. Blockages in this chakra can reduce confidence and create insecurity.

Our orange sacral chakras, located around three inches below the belly button, play an integral role in the regulation of our emotions and sexuality. If you’re suffering from a blockage in the sacral chakra, you may experience emotional instability, sexual dysfunctions, and an increased attraction to addictive behaviours.

Finally, we come to the red base chakra — also known as the root or Muladhara chakra — which sits at the base of the spine. As the name suggests, this chakra has been associated with our base survival instincts — such as hunger, thirst and sleep — as well as our physical identity and aspects of the self. Blockages in this chakra can manifest themselves in a variety of nasty ways including phobias, depression, nightmares, fatigue and eating disorders.

How Healing Works
“A healer’s power stems not from any special ability, but from maintaining the courage and awareness to embody and express the universal healing power that every human being naturally possesses” — Eric Micha’el Leventhal

Depending on which particular chakras or energy fields hold the most negative energy, an energy healer can work to clear our blockages in a variety of different ways — most practitioners will work with the client in identifying which specific healing techniques achieve the best results.

Healers can act to return our chakras’ vibrational energies back to their original frequencies through the use of music, colour, essential oils, scents, or crystal therapies. All forms of energy healing will involve the healer channelling light energy into the affected chakra to disperse trapped negativity and cleanse the aura. The idea is that those with clear and healthy auras are less likely to absorb negative energy in their day-to-day lives, making it easier to maintain a healthy body, mind, and spirit.

A 2015 investigation into energy medicine found that, of 50 reports of pain, 76% (38) reported a marked improvement after the implementation of energy healing methods. Furthermore, of 29 non-pain-related problems, 79% (23) went on to report a marked improvement. These improvements were also reported to have been immediate, taking place either during or directly after a session.

Whether you subscribe to the idea of spirituality or you find yourself sceptical of the whole energy healing process, this non-invasive, non-aggressive method really can achieve results in alleviating pain and a whole range of negative health symptoms — it’s at least worth a try to see if that dreadful backache could be soothed by some chakra-opening!

What to Expect
“I work with the person’s consciousness and their energy field; there is only physical contact with the client when necessary” — Timothy Pope
The duration of a typical energy healing session is somewhere between 60 and 90 minutes — but can be shorter or longer as per request or requirement. You can expect your practitioner to take you through three stages in your session:

Awareness:
Your healer will first take you through the initial stages of discussion and evaluation in order to identify and clarify specific issues that require addressing. You may also be aided through a process of discovering any psychological or spiritual root causes of the particular condition
or ailment you find yourself suffering from.

Release:
After a brief period of meditation to enhance focus and calm the mind, the healing will begin. Normally conducted while you lie down on a therapy table, your healer will make light sweeping motions with their hands just above you, or lightly place their hands on your body, beginning at the feet and working upwards along your joints, chakras, and into the specific areas affected by negative energy blockages in order to infuse positive light energy into your mind, body and spirit.

While individual experiences will differ from person to person, you may become aware of shifts of energy as they occur within you. Some report a heightened sense of awareness to sensations or thought patterns, falling into a deep state of relaxation, or experiencing a powerful emotional release.

Integration:
After the healing is complete, you may feel either energised or fatigued. Either way, a period of rest is usually recommended after the session has taken place in order to fully integrate your healing into the treated chakras and energy fields. Your practitioner will then teach you the necessary techniques to practice in between your sessions to support and reinforce the healing that has taken place — which can include (but is not limited to) a specific form of
exercise, diet, prayer, or relaxation technique.

After repeated sessions, you may well find your body and mind operating at a much healthier frequency, allowing any negativity you face in your day-to-day life to just bounce right off you!

Healers are NOT Doctors

While energy healing can provide you with some powerful positive results, it’s important to remember that an energy healing session is in no way a substitute for advice, diagnosis, or treatment from a licensed medical professional. You should always seek the proper medical care for any health issues you may suffer from, and consult your doctor before using alternative or holistic medicine as a way to manage or reduce symptoms.

If getting in touch with your spirituality and infusing some much-needed positive energy into your life sounds like the way to go for you, do some research into your local energy healing centres and show off your glowing aura to the world!
