According to experts, we can define burnout as “a state of chronic stress that leads to signs and symptoms” in three overarching areas: physical, emotional, and mental. Examples of this include: chronic fatigue or insomnia, feeling overwhelmed, a lack of motivation to work or irritability.

Everyone has their off days; the days where they don’t feel like doing anything at all. Those feelings of demotivation, laziness and fatigue are just all part of the cycle of life. You are not wrong for feeling this way, but how you handle these emotions and unwanted feelings can be dealt with effectively with just a few simple tips.

Dance it off

Now this is not going to be for everyone, but I promise you even if you aren’t a morning person, you will reap the benefits from dancing. The first thing to do when you wake up in the morning is put on your favourite playlist, get up out of the bed and get jiggy. This can be the simplest of movements, but it instantly makes you feel good and releases endorphins, putting you into a really positive and happy mindset for the rest of the day.

Not only does it help your mental state going forward, but it is also a simple form of exercise. There are a lot of people that do not like going to the gym or working out, so if dancing is your choice of daily exercise then so be it! It can make you feel good about yourself and sets you up for success.

Do not overload

One of the biggest mistakes people make when they are not able to function well is to set themselves a million and one tasks from their bed — whether that be work tasks, or just general things that need to get done.

However by adding too many tasks on your to-do list for the day can set you up for failure. You need to prioritise what is a must, and what is not as much of a necessity.

Limit your tasks down to maybe four a day and work from there. By overdoing it, you will feel a lot worse, and the long term effects of feeling burnt out will continue on for longer than wanted.

Take advantage of technology

As we now live in a more digital world, platforms such as Zoom and Skype are very popular in contacting and creating meetings with fellow employees or clients. Burning out can cause you to have to work from home due to the stress, and these kinds of apps can help you feel included in the typical day to day work life that occurs in the office.

Focus on self-reflection

Understanding and taking the time to work out what the cause of your burn out could be will enhance your knowledge of your own self awareness, and encourage you to learn from the past. Both of these aspects will help you in the future if things start to get heavy or hard to manage.

Self-care is a must! Incorporate time into your morning/evening to journal, meditate and read — these are just a few things that can help you get in touch with your emotions and mental state sufficiently.
