As we step into February 2021, it’s important to look back on the previous month and year that has just passed. With 2020 being one of the toughest years in modern world history, many of us weren’t quite able to achieve what we had set out to.
But the new year represents fresh beginnings and increasing your purpose in life can go a long way in helping you to achieve your goals for the next few chapters ahead. Here are some tips on how to smash your goals for the new year:
1. Work out what you want to achieve in life
Although it may sound obvious, ask yourself this question: do I really know what I want to achieve in life? Many of us have short term goals such as having a good day at work, or being able to afford a luxury item you’ve desperately been wanting to buy. However, understanding what you want long term is key to getting you where you want to be.
If you know what you want to achieve in life, you can then work out a plan of how you are going to get there. For example, let’s say your goal is to have happiness. First off, you would need to recognise what makes you happy in life, and then work out how you are going to achieve each of these things first.
Having your long term goal in the back of your mind when setting out to reach your short term goals will increase the likelihood of you succeeding in them, thus getting you where you want to be in life sooner.
2. Why do you want to achieve it?
Now that you’ve decided what you want to achieve, the next stage is to work out how you are going to get it done. Despite common belief, motivation in itself doesn’t last longer than a couple of weeks at most, because simply forcing yourself to do something without a plan is going to lead to failure.
At the end of the day, you’ve got to want something enough to be able to achieve it.
What gets you to smash your goals in life is acting with purpose. If you have a clear reason for challenging yourself, you will find it much easier to stick to it and reach what you’ve been aiming for.
Consider noting down all of the positive outcomes of achieving the goal, so that if you’re ever feeling demotivated, you will remind yourself of why you want it.
3. Focus on you and the others around you
One of the most important things to remember when increasing your purpose is to appreciate yourself. Knowing why you deserve to achieve in life will make you want to get there even more.
Similar to the above section, having a list of specific reasons that remind you of why you have earned the right to achieve in life will help you to have a focused mind on getting there.
Another thing to consider is how the people around you impact your goals. Are they people who add value to your life and spur you on to achieve your goals? Friends and family who laugh at your goals or make you doubt yourself, are not the people you want to be surrounding yourself with. Instead, focus on spending time with those who do want you to achieve.
