Remote work is something that many people are now facing due to the current climate and the social interaction is down to a bare minimum. According to new research, almost half of UK workers have experienced loneliness while working from home.

This sudden change of environment can be daunting for many, and it may feel like you are struggling with being home alone. However, there are many ways that can help you to overcome this lonely feeling.

  1. Online interaction

One thing that you have going for you is the access to others through social media platforms and messaging apps. Do not hesitate to message fellow colleagues as you would in the office, whether that is to discuss queries about work, or a general conversation about how they are getting on.

The beauty of technology is that we can remain in contact with people we work with, so using tech to our advantage is the key to not feeling like you are alone in this.

2. Find new hobbies and interests

Now that you have more time on your hands in comparison to your previous circumstances, use that to gain something new in your life that you never considered before. It could be starting a book that you never got round to reading, or taking part in online learning about a particular subject you always found interesting. Be productive and keep finding things to do in your spare time. This will naturally prevent you feeling like you are wasting time away at home.

3. Don’t feel afraid to speak up

70% of the workers surveyed by Totaljobs said the loneliness they had experienced had a negative impact on their wellbeing. However, only 1 in 10 of the workers who felt lonely wanted to bring up the topic with their colleagues, according to the research.

Holding back your feelings to your mentors and authority figures at work is not going to make things any better. Expressing how you’re feeling and getting their opinion with regards to you situation would be so much more beneficial, as it will then be easier for them to guide and support you through this difficult time.

Remember that colleagues at work will be just as understanding; many are in similar positions and know how it can have an immense impact on your health and wellbeing.

4. Get out the house

Working from home is incomparable to being in the office and work environment you are used to. You naturally start to feel trapped, so use the time you have wisely. When you have a moment or breaks during the day, go out for a walk or run. Make sure you are getting some outside air, which will naturally make you feel more awake and refreshed.
